Intro

For Referring GPs

Dr Robert Allen is an authorised ADHD prescriber under the WA GP ADHD prescribing pathway (RACGP / WA Department of Health, Cohort 2), providing adult ADHD assessment at St John Medical Joondalup and paediatric assessment on site at Paeds Plus, Currambine.

Referrals are managed by Dr Allen directly rather than by reception. Capacity is capped, and referrals close when it is reached — the current status is always shown on the [adult assessment page].

Two referral routes

Patients under 17 → refer to Paeds Plus, Currambine in the usual way. Paeds Plus triages and, with family consent, allocates suitable presentations to Dr Allen's list. No separate referral to Dr Allen is needed.

A complete referral includes:

  • Current medications and any past ADHD medication trials

  • Cardiovascular history, including recent blood pressure and heart rate, and any personal or family history of cardiac disease or sudden death

  • Psychiatric history and current mental state

  • Substance use screen — please specifically document cannabis/THC use, including any current medicinal cannabis prescription

  • Patient-completed ASRS v1.1 (screening only — diagnosis is by structured interview)

Incomplete referrals are returned with the template attached. Complete referrals receive an accept/decline decision within [X] business days.

Exclusion criteria

Please refer these patients to a psychiatrist or paediatrician rather than to this service — a returned referral costs your patient weeks.

Co-prescribing

Separate to new assessments, Dr Allen can act as co-prescriber for patients already diagnosed and stabilised by a paediatrician or psychiatrist, so that prescriptions and reviews happen locally rather than through the specialist.

To set this up: ask the patient to bring, or forward directly, the specialist's most recent letter including the authorisation wording and the current treatment plan. Patients moving from interstate or from a closed practice are welcome — the same requirement applies.

Co-prescribing arrangements sit outside the staged access above and are not subject to the same capacity limits, though the same exclusion criteria apply.
