ADHD Assessment & Treatment
Structured ADHD assessment, diagnosis and medication management for children, adolescents and adults — delivered by Dr Robert Allen under the Western Australian GP ADHD prescribing pathway.
Demand for ADHD assessment in Western Australia exceeds available specialist capacity, and waits can be long. In response, the WA Department of Health established a training and authorisation pathway allowing selected GPs to assess, diagnose and prescribe for ADHD, with paediatrician and psychiatrist support. Dr Allen completed this program as part of Cohort 2 and is an authorised prescriber under it.
This is a small, deliberately capped service. The number of patients an authorised GP prescriber can hold is limited, so referrals open and close against real capacity rather than accumulating into a waitlist. When referrals are open you'll be given a realistic timeframe before you commit to anything; when they're closed, this page will say so.
Three pathways
Children & adolescents (10yr to 16yr old)
Assessed and managed at Paeds Plus, Currambine, with paediatrician support on site. Referrals go directly to Paeds Plus.
Adults (17yr and above)
A dedicated ADHD clinic at St John, Joondalup. Comprehensive assessment, diagnosis, and ongoing treatment.
Already diagnosed and treated elsewhere?
Dr Allen can act as co-prescriber for patients diagnosed by a paediatrician or psychiatrist, managing prescriptions and reviews locally. We need agreement from your specialist and a clinic letter with the latest information.
What this service is — and isn't
It is: a structured, guideline-based assessment following the Australian Evidence-Based Clinical Practice Guideline for ADHD (AADPA) — a full diagnostic interview with collateral history, standardised rating scales, and functional assessment.
It isn't: a rapid online diagnosis. Questionnaire scores alone cannot diagnose ADHD — they over-identify it substantially. Nor is assessment a guarantee of diagnosis: the fee covers a thorough and honest assessment, and if ADHD isn't the right explanation for your symptoms, you'll be told so clearly and given a direction.
Who this service can — and can't — see
This service operates under the Western Australian GP ADHD prescribing pathway, which sets strict limits on the presentations a GP can assess and treat. These boundaries exist for patient safety: some patients genuinely need comprehensive neuropsychological assessment or psychiatrist-led care, and seeing them in a GP lead clinic could delay the right help.
This service cannot accept referrals for:
01 Adults with an active substance use disorder or dependence — including regular non-prescribed cannabis/THC use
02 Patients currently prescribed medicinal cannabis (THC).
03 Psychotic disorders or bipolar disorder (any type)
04 Active suicidal thoughts, self-harm, or other high-risk presentations
05 Autism spectrum disorder (Level 3)
06 Significant intellectual disability
07 Children under 10
If any of the criteria above apply, your GP can refer you to an appropriate specialist service instead.
